Overview

The Academy for Career Development (The Academy) is a not-for-profit 501C3 Charitable Organization founded in November of 1992. It is Rochester’s only not-for-profit Business School Registered by the University of the State of New York, NYS Education Department, Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision (it is one of only sixteen such organizations across New York State).

The Academy is an approved training vendor under the Rochester/Monroe County Workforce Investment Board through its’ Rochester Works One-Stop Career Center, the NYS Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals With Disabilities (VESID), and various programs through the NYS Department of Labor. It is also a member of the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), The Community Technology Centers Network (CTCNet), and AC4 (the Association of Christian Community Computing Centers). In addition, the Academy is an Employment Network and participant in the Ticket-to-Work Program.

Because of the needs of the population it serves, The Academy's class sizes are very small (with an average class size of 8 students). All of the Academy's classes are offered in four hour daily units, five days a week; with morning sessions running from 8:00am to 12:00pm, and afternoon sessions from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. It offers its Advanced Level Programs in the evening (5:30-8:30pm). Its facility at 1349 South Avenue, Rochester, NY 14620 offers a very convenient and comfortable (home type) setting consisting of two small classrooms on the first floor. This relaxed environment, consisting of approximately 1500 square feet of space, has been highly conducive to learning for our students. Besides the 2 classrooms, the first floor facility contains a handicapped accessible bathroom, student break room, an administrative office, a copy room, and a supply/storage room. The community work experience components of the Academy’s Programs take place at the Academy’s Computer Remanufacturing and Recycling facility at 400 Dewey Avenue, Rochester NY 14613, and at our CommuniTech Community Computer Helpdesk and Technical Support Services Center at WXXI/PBS 280 State Street, Rochester NY 14603 (Part Time morning shifts run M-F from 9:00am through 12:30pm, and afternoon shifts run from 1:00pm through 4:30pm. Full Time shifts run M-F from 8:00am to 5:00pm). Both centers support numerous not-for-profit community technology programs throughout Rochester and the surrounding region.
